The JK® System Compared to Other Underfloor Heating

When installing underfloor heating in modern homes, pouring new screed over the existing one is often not practical or even possible due to the increased floor height, which can be up to 60mm and cause clearance issues.

While pre-grooved panels offer a slimmer alternative, they still add 15-35mm to the floor level. This height increase reduces overall room head height and may necessitate more modifications, such as:

  • Trimming doors
  • Altering stairs
  • Adjusting countertop heights

Completely removing the old screed to install a brand-new system is the most thorough option, but it comes with its own drawbacks, such as:

  • High Costs: Expenses scale quickly due to the dual labour of demolition and new installation.
  • Waste Generation: The process creates substantial construction debris that requires disposal.

Underfloor Heating FAQs

The JK system uses an “in-ground” warm-water (hydronic) design. Instead of laying down insulation boards and pouring a thick layer of new concrete/screed over the pipes, which adds significant height to the floor, JK uses a unique approach:

  • Precision Grinding: Technicians use a custom-engineered industrial machine (the JK Floorgrinder) fitted with diamond blades to cut a precisely planned network of grooves into your existing floor. 
  • Flushed Pipes: The grooves are cut to a depth of roughly 16mm. Flexible heating pipes are then slotted directly into these grooves so they sit flush with or just below the surface.
  • Low-Temperature Efficiency: Because the pipes sit at the top of the floor construction rather than being buried under inches of concrete, the heat doesn’t have to travel as far, so the system can run at lower temperatures and respond faster to thermostat changes than traditional underfloor systems.
